W Bengal girl rescued after being sold' four times

ALWAR: The police have rescued a 23-year-old woman belonging to West Bengal who was "sold" at least four times to various people after a man "bought" her from her native place three years ago. The police are yet to arrest the accused men involved in these "transactions". Investigation is on whether the victim was forced into prostitution.

It is the fourth case in the past one month in which the police recovered four girls bought from other states by locals.

According to the police, the matter came to light when the victim's father Akbar Ali, a resident of Barrackpore subdivision in North 24 Parganas district in West Bengal, approached the Alwar SP on August 16 claiming that his daughter had been married to one Anees, a resident of Alwar district, three years ago. The father alleged that Anees had "sold" his daughter to other people.

The police investigated and rescued the woman from Murrakheda village of Mahendragarh district in Haryana where she was living with one Jagmal.

The victim told the police that after marrying her, Anees sold her to Kanta Bai, a resident of Kotputali in Jaipur district "for profit". The girl was then "resold" to one Rajkumar and then to Jagmohan recently. While living with Jagmohan, she became pregnant and has a 10-month old child now.

Brijbhushan, incharge of the MIA police station in Alwar, said that statements of the victim have been recorded. "Medical examination has been conducted and she was produced in a court on Tuesday following which she was handed over to her father," said the officer.

The police said some people, especially truck drivers, from Mewat region of Rajasthan usually go to West Bengal, Bihar and Orissa and marry girls from poverty-stricken background. Then they sell the girls to others and often force them into prostitution. TOI
