Center to set up human trafficking units in all districts of country: Ajay Makan
CHANDIGARH: Union Minister of State for Home, Ajay Maken Saturday said that Government of India is serious about combating the social malady of human trafficking and human trafficking units will be set up in each district of the country and Ministry of Home Affairs would utilize the available resources for this purpose.
Ajay Maken was addressing a three-day workshop on “Combating Trafficking in Human Beings” being held at Haryana Police Academy, Madhuban in Karnal district.
He laid emphases on the need and importance of addressing the issue especially because this was a fast growing menace at national and international level. The human trafficking alone contributes to the illegal business of about Rs 25,000 to Rs 50,000 crore in the world. This was the third largest crime after narcotics and arms smuggling, he added.
He said that five such type of workshops would be organized at national level. Trainers would be trained to help spreading awareness among the Police, Prosecution, Women and Child Department and NGOs so that these agencies were capable of preventing incidents of human trafficking. It had been very meaningful by bringing Police, Prosecution and Court on a common platform to discuss the issue. This practice of bringing these three institutions of justice delivery systems together was initially started in the state of Andhra Pradesh and the results are very enthusiastic. This arrangement had increased the rate of conviction. We had stringent laws for prevention of human trafficking, the only need was to build up a mechanism to implement them in an effective manner. He said that State Police must also play an important role in rehabilitation and reintegration of the victims in the society.
He said that although police helps in saving lives of the victims of human trafficking, yet the question before us was to ponder that how the services of the police could be used more effectively for rehabilitating and brining these victims in the main stream of the society.
