In the name of love

KOCHI: Parents beware. Racketeers from Orissa, Jharkhand and Bihar camping in the city and the suburbs under the guise of construction labourers are  trapping young girls by feigning love.
As the influx of North Indian migrants has increased drastically in the last couple of months, the enforcement agencies are finding it hard to identify the whereabouts of these workers.
Right from cleaning jobs to major construction work, migrant labourers out number local labourers. It is girls from low and middle-income families who fall prey to these fraudsters who dress fashionably and use high-end mobile phones. Recently, the state police had brought to light the modus
operandi of these
racketeers.
Though the police suspect that these people who owe allegiance to insurgent groups resort to the strategy to conduct recruitment in Kerala, they have not yet stumbled upon any strong evidence on the possible recruitment drive.
It was an incident that happened in Kuttipuram in Malappuram district that forced the police to strengthen their vigilance on the migrant labour camps in the city. The police officials said that a minor girl hailing from Kuttipuram in Malappuram district was rescued on March 5 by a joint operation by the Kerala police team and the Orissa police at Berhampur near Darinbad which was a Maoist stronghold. The statements given by the rescued girl  helped the Kerala police to get details about the presence of other Malayali girls in Berhampur and other nearby areas which are considered Maoist areas.
Kuttipuram sub-inspector P C Basheer said it was on February 20 that the 14-year-old girl was taken to Orissa by a person identified as Rajmoura, 23, who was doing some odd jobs in Kuttipuram. “Based on the complaint filed by the parents of the girl, we launched an investigation and it was found that the person had taken the girl to Orissa after promising to marry her,” he said. “The girl disclosed that she had met a woman from Thrissur in Berhampur who advised her to escape from the place,” the official said. The girl was lodged in a remote place where Maoist activities are strong.
Malappuram SP K Sethuraman said it was after launching a concerted effort  with the Orissa police that  they rescued the girl. “We have launched a probe to trace the person who took the girl to Orissa. As per the information received, Rajmoura is a tribal from Orissa,” he said.
Senior police officials in Kochi said that they had launched various projects to track the activities of migrant labourers. “Video graphs of migrant labourers are taken and details of each and every labourer collected. This is being done at all police stations,” the officials said.
