Police-politician nexus in human trafficking: Centre

NEW DELHI, 30 APRIL: The Centre has told the Supreme Court that trafficking of women and children is increasing due to the unholy nexus among gang members, police, and even politicians, and that the trafficking network is not only well organised but has links both within the country as well as in the neighbouring states. The main allurement for the teenaged girls and young children into sexual trade are promises of marriage and employment.
A Bench of Mr Justice Dalveer Bhandari and Mr Justice AK Patnaik has directed the central adoption resource agencies to prepare a well-coordinated plan and regulate inter-country adoption for rehabilitation of the children belonging to the economically backward sections of society.
The court has also been informed that urgent and comprehensive steps are being taken by the government to check the menace as the Millennium Development Goals cannot be secured unless child protection is an integral part of programmes, strategies and plans for their development. The PIL is scheduled for further hearing on 19 July.
According to the Solicitor General of India Gopal Subramaniam, in a study undertaken by the Government of India in coordination with UNICEF, areas relating to trafficking have been acknowledged and the government has also admitted the increasing prevalence of trafficking for the purpose of commercial and sexual exploitation of children.
According to the study published by the department of women and child development, ministry of HRD, around 2 million children, aged between 5 and 16, are forced into commercial sexual exploitation around the world every year and girls in the age group of 10-14 are most vulnerable.  Source
