15-year-old girl married off to money lender

A 15-year-old school girl was allegedly married off to a 28-year-old money lender as his second wife by her tribal family in Orthanadu in Thanjavur as they were unable to repay a debt of Rs 10,000.
Villagers said that Ramya (name changed), complained of sexual abuse by her ‘husband’.

“Ramya’s father took a loan from Murugan six months ago but could not repay the loan. Murugan told the family that if they did not repay the money, Ramya had to be married off to him after she attained puberty,” said Orthanadu police personnel.

“The family members confessed that they had ‘fixed’ the marriage recently. However, when we interrogated them, they denied that the wedding was performed,” said Orthanadu SI Veerasamy.
Residents of Narikurava colony said on condition of anonymity that relatives had attended the wedding two weeks ago.
“The moneylender forced the family to get the girl married to him. She should be rescued and taken care of by the government,” said the villagers.
The villagers said that Ramya was good at her studies but had stopped going to school in June.

“Teachers from her school, who wanted to visit Ramya, were not allowed to talk to her. Three other girls from the school have also discontinued studies,” they said.
Social welfare minister Selvi Ramajayam told DC that she would take action to rescue the girl.

“It is shocking that a minor girl was married off to a moneylender as a barter for a loan. I will ask my officers to rescue the girl,” she said.
