3 girls rescued while being trafficked

CHITTAGONG, SEPT 25: Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) rescued three teenaged girls from illegal prostitution at Khulshi area in Chittagong on Saturday night. RAB also arrested Shelly Akter, the godmother of the illegal prostitution during the drive. According to RAB sources, acting on a tip off, a team of RAB-7 conducted a drive at a flat of Jahanara Mansion on Jakir Hossen Road at Khilshi area and recovered the three teenaged girls on Saturday night.
They had been compelled to get involved in prostitution by Shelly Akter for last three months after being trafficked there by some brokers, the sources said.
The RAB sources said that some brokers are trafficking teenaged girls of poor families in the villages by tempting them with good jobs or in guise of boyfriends. Talking to The Independent three victim girls describe how they were trafficked and tortured to compel them to get involved in prostitution.
Jhorna (disguised name), a 16 year old girl of poor family, was brought to Chittagong city from a village of Chakaria upazila with the promise of good jobs in garments factory by a broker Shahabuddin and sold to Shelly few months ago. She was tortured and compelled to be a prostitute.
Fortunately she got rid of Shelly after passing one month of hell but she had to get back to the hell unwillingly as she was not socially accepted.
Shathi (disguised name), 18, one of the recovered girls, told The Independent that she was promised marriage by her boyfriend Akber who took her to Shelly Akter and left the place where she was raped and tortured to get involved in prostitution. “I didn’t know that I was sold to Shelly by my boyfriend,” she said
Shumi, (disguised name) another girl aging 15, used live with her sister and read in class nine in a school at Madarbari area. One day she got out of home with two friends who took her to meet with a so called sister in law and sold her to the godmother Shelly.
Later she was tortured and locked in bathroom for hours to compel her to get involved in prostitution. At the initial interrogation, the arrested godmother Shelly said that she had been doing prostitution for last three years and for that she rented a flat for Taka 14000 at Khulshi area.
