A minor girl, aged 13 years, was allegedly raped by a resident of Tarn Taran after she was offered to him by the girl’s maternal grandmother.
When this fact was reported to the girl’s mother, she approached the authorities and after repeated requests managed to get an FIR registered. However, the mother has now retracted from her statement.
Taking stock of the alleged inaction on the part of Punjab Police and the influence exerted by the accused, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has converted a complaint written in this regard by a Tarn Taran resident into a writ petition. Taking suo motu cognizance of the complaint submitted by Surjit Singh Chohla Saheb, Justice Hemant Gupta has issued notices to the state, asking it to file its response.
According to the complainant, an FIR was registered on June 1 on the complaint of a mother, who alleged that her 13-year-old daughter had been raped by one Satnam Singh. The complainant alleged that Satnam Singh had close relations with a high-level political person. “Hence, the police took no action against him for a long time. The mother was humiliated every day and offered money to bury the matter. Since no action was taken by the police, the mother also succumbed to the pressure and changed her statement,” read the complaint.
It has been alleged that the mother had remarried and left her daughter with her maternal grandmother. After the minor girl rang up her mother and informed that she had been raped by Satnam Singh, the mother had approached police authorities.
