Bangladeshi girl rescued, two arrested

Police arrested a Haryana resident and a local villager of Charghat under Swarupnagar police station in North 24 Parganas district following a complaint of forceful marriage by a Bangladeshi girl.

The girl was also rescued and taken into custody under the Foreigners Act, police added.

Yesterday, a couple of Baccharpara of Charghat area, Tarapada Das and his wife, tried to hand over a Bangladeshi girl to a Haryana resident, Mukul Keshab, by a organising a ''marriage ceremony'' which was however vehemently opposed by the girl, identified as Tapati Mondal. She also raised alarm after which some neighourers intervened and informed the local police station.

The girl was reportedly brought by the couple to Charghat on the plea of providing a job and they allegedly tried to sell her.

Police arrested Mukul Keshab and an associate of the couple, Jagadish Das, while Tarapada and his wife escaped arrest.

The local residents alleged that the Das couple and their associates had a nexus with inter-state woman traffickers. They used to bring poor Bangladeshi girls to India on the plea of providing a job and then sell them to the agents of different brothels of northern and western India.

Police also said the district police, on a number of occasions earlier, rescued such girls from the northern and western states. Source
