Orriya Girl ‘sold’ for Rs 50,000, rescued

SALEPUR: A 24-year-old girl was rescued by Salepur police from Haryana after she was allegedly sold by a relative for Rs 50,000. Yesterday she was handed over to her parents soon after arriving at Mahanga. Police said the girl, Kabita Sahoo of Nahanga village in Palli Sahi panchayat under Mahanga block had gone visiting her cousin Puran Chand at Khoi village in Rajasthan in February last year. On February 25 the same year Chand allegedly sold Kavita for Rs 50,000 to Mam Raj, a farm house owner of Guduni village under Mahendragarh district in Haryana. He later informed Kabita’s family that Kabita and Mam Raj were in love for which he had given her in marriage to Raj. However, facts came to the fore when Kabita’s brother Bichitrananda Sahoo went to meet his sister at Raj’s house. On learning that Kabita was being physically and mentally tortured and was being compelled to work as a bonded labourer in Raj’s farm house, Bichitrananda wanted to bring back his sister. Raj’s family, however, refused to let her go and claimed that they had bought Kabita for Rs 50,000 from Chand. Finding no way out, Bichitrananda returned home and filed an FIR before SP (Rural), Cuttack, Rajat Kanti Mishra, requesting to rescue his sister. Accordingly, on February 18, 2010, IIC, Mahanga police station RN Behera despatched a police team comprising Sub-Inspector BC Samal, havildar A Mallik, constable G. Bhuyan and lady constable R. Mahapatra to Haryana. The team raided the farm house and rescued the girl. However, both the accused Chand and Raj are absconding, police said adding that the girl had been handed over to her family members. source
